Weekend Bread Basket

Introduction

Welcome to the Weekend Bread Basket, a community-driven project dedicated to sharing the gift of bread with those in need. For ten years, we’ve been delivering fresh bread to various communities across greater Hobart, spreading love and nourishment to those who need it most.

Bread is collected and handed out based on a system of ethical distribution.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to provide free bread to those who may not have access to it otherwise. We believe that bread is a fundamental right, and everyone deserves a slice of warmth and comfort. I’m proud to have had a team of dedicated volunteers who have helped make this happen every week.

Our Delivery Route

A public space in CBD Hobart, where anyone can come and collect a loaf

Every Saturday at Mathers Lane, 338 Bathurst Street, Hobart CBD, 4:45pm.

A local homeless shelter, providing a warm meal for those seeking refugee

Every Saturday at Safe Space, Mission Australia, Hobart. A daily support space for rough sleepers! – not currently.

A public housing block, bringing fresh bread to families in need

Select bread and cakes are delivered to individual units at the site. We were told the block has the ‘worst reputation in Hobart’ – we think “it’s a great place to live, people are so grateful, generous, and community oriented”.

A church every Sunday, where we present baskets of free bread to the community there

Baskets of bread are made available from 10am through City North Church, Golden Years Club, Main Road, Glenorchy.

Via an online community page

Weekend Bread Basket utilises digital communications.

We use Facebook groups in order to find networks that can manage the increasing need and distribution of bread.

Individual homes, delivering bread directly to those who may be struggling

Providing bread to individuals in our outreach program.

Outreach can support the program because going to them develops relationships different to when we go to them.

Our Volunteers

I’m grateful for the volunteers who have joined me over the years, helping me sort, pack, and deliver bread to our communities. Your kindness and generosity have made a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

Get Involved

If you’d like to join my team or support this mission, please get in touch! I’m always looking for new volunteers and donations to help continue the good work.
