I am your Lived Experience Consumer Representative. And if I can’t do it on the day of your important meeting I can send one of my best representatives. But first what is a lived experience consumer representative – they are someone who uses their personal experience of mental health challenges, disability, or social issues to contribute to the design, delivery, and evaluation of services. Their role ensures that the voices of people with firsthand experience are included in decision-making processes, policy development, and service improvement.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Advocacy: Representing the perspectives and needs of consumers to influence positive change.
- Consultation: Participating in committees, advisory groups, or project teams to provide feedback on programs and policies.
- Collaboration: Working alongside professionals, service providers, and other stakeholders to co-design better systems and supports.
- Education: Sharing insights to help staff and organisations understand the lived experience perspective.
It’s a vital role in creating more person-centred, inclusive, and effective services—especially in mental health, social work, and community sectors.
