STREETSHELTER: Less Is More. We learned that removing comfort was the kindness thing we could do.

The Power of Simplicity: Learning from Our Guests at StreetShelter

At StreetShelter, we’ve learned that sometimes, less is more. Our journey to understanding the importance of simplicity began with a surprising discovery: some of our guests, who had been sleeping rough, preferred a harder bed.

Initially, we thought we were showing our care and compassion by providing a lush environment, complete with plush mattresses and comfortable bedding. However, one client, who stayed with us on and off over time, gradually began to remove more and more bedding. At first, we didn’t understand what was happening, but as we reflected on their actions, we realized that we had been trying too hard.

Our guest was used to sleeping rough, and the comforts we provided were not only unfamiliar but also overwhelming. We learned that people often prefer what they’re used to, even if it’s not what we might consider comfortable.

This experience taught us a valuable lesson: simplicity is key. We’ve since adopted a new approach, providing a plain, austere environment as the default. We add comforts and amenities only as they’re requested or accepted by our guests.

This shift in approach has been transformative. By respecting our guests’ preferences and boundaries, we’ve created a more welcoming and inclusive space. We’ve also learned to appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the importance of understanding the needs and desires of those we serve.

The Timber Board Bed Base: A Game-Changer

One of the most significant changes we’ve made is introducing a timber board bed base without a mattress or soft bedding. This may seem counterintuitive, but for some of our guests, it’s been a game-changer. The hardness of the bed provides a sense of familiarity and comfort, allowing them to rest more easily.

Conclusion

Our journey at StreetShelter has taught us that sometimes, the best way to show care and compassion is to simplify and respect the preferences of those we serve. By providing a plain, austere environment and adding comforts only as needed, we’ve created a more welcoming and inclusive space for our guests. We’re grateful for the lessons we’ve learned and look forward to continuing to adapt and improve our services to meet the unique needs of those we serve.
