CASE STUDY: Army. From Streets to Stability.

Introduction

In the heart of our city, a familiar sight is the struggle of homelessness. One individual, Army, stood out amidst the crowd. Their story is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and the impact of compassionate support. As the founder of StreetShelter, I accepted the challenge of helping Army, who refused in-patient support despite being delusional and suicidal. This case study shares their journey from despair to hope.

Initial Assessment

Army’s situation was dire. Recently assaulted, they were linking with a homeless shelter ad hoc, struggling with:

  • Low social support
  • No medication control
  • No banking support
  • No community support

Their behavior was marked by constant talking to themselves, loud yelling in public, and apparent disconnection from reality.

Intervention

The Ford parked overnight in front of mansion’s and lavender bushes.

Providing accommodation through StreetShelter, I became Army’s primary support system. Initially, they relied solely on the food I brought, revealing the extent of their hunger and incapacity. Through psychoanalysis and unwavering support, we worked together to rebuild their life.

Outcomes

Over a year, or two, Army’s transformation was remarkable:

  • Improved mental health and stability (without medication)
  • Secured a public housing unit
  • Formed meaningful friendships (street level)
  • Reconnected (limited) with family members

Conclusion

Army’s case study demonstrates the power of compassionate intervention. By addressing their basic needs and providing a supportive environment, I enabled their journey toward stability and hope. As I continue to serve individuals like Army, I’m reminded that everyone deserves a chance to rebuild and thrive.
