We collected donuts at night, and delivered them to night shelters for people who were homeless, and living in poverty.
Introducing Sweet Relief

“Sweet Relief” was a charity project born from a simple yet powerful idea: sharing the sweetness of donuts with those who need it most. By partnering with a local donut shop, we collected fresh treats after hours and delivered them to homeless shelters, bringing joy and warmth to those struggling with homelessness. As we witnessed the impact of this small act, we became increasingly drawn to the complex issues surrounding homelessness, leading us to merge “Sweet Relief” with our StreetWork initiative. Although the project is currently on pause, its legacy lives on, reminding us of the power of small gestures and the importance of continuing to support those in need.
Sweet Deliverance: How Donuts Brought Joy to the Homeless

As we arrived at the night shelter, a small group of individuals eagerly awaited our arrival, huddled together in the cold darkness. They had been waiting for hours, braving the chill of the evening, just to secure a spot in line. But as we pulled up with our sweet cargo, their faces lit up with anticipation. We handed out the donuts, and it was remarkable to see how they shared them among themselves, like a makeshift family. An elderly woman took charge, distributing the treats to the younger adults and children, her kindness and selflessness a beacon of hope in the midst of hardship. We lingered for a while, chatting with them, and witnessing the joy that something as simple as a donut could bring. In that moment, it was clear that Sweet Relief was about more than just a sweet treat – it was about connection, community, and the resilience of the human spirit.
From Sugar Rush to Soulful Gesture: The Story of Sweet Relief

In a rare breach of protocol, our sweet donuts gained entry into the typically closed-off world of homeless shelters, bringing a burst of joy and warmth to those within. By sidestepping formal channels and red tape, we managed to establish a grassroots connection with these organizations, our humble treats proving too sweet to resist. Though our efforts may seem informal, we remain mindful of the corporate machinery at play, maintaining a professional approach to ensure our charitable endeavors are met with respect and effectiveness. In this way, Sweet Relief has carved out a unique space, bridging the gap between generosity and bureaucracy, and bringing a taste of hope to those who need it most.
Donuts After Dark: Spreading Cheer to Those in Need

As the reputation of Sweet Relief grew, so did my own connections with the community. I began to attend the night shelter at other times, discovering that it doubled as a daytime drop-in center. Though access was restricted, I somehow found myself welcomed inside. I struck up friendships with staff and clients alike, building trust and rapport that eventually allowed me to demonstrate social work skills. The donuts had been my initial icebreaker, but soon I was connecting people with services, advocating for their needs, and even helping some find shelter and support.

The staff at the center was puzzled by my influence, unsure how I had managed to build relationships that they struggled to establish. But I knew that my connection was rooted in something deeper than just donuts or small talk. I had taken the time to listen, to learn about each person’s story and struggles. And in doing so, I had earned their trust and respect. As my knowledge of each client’s needs grew, so did my power to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
A Hole Lot of Love: How Sweet Relief Made a Difference

Through Sweet Relief, I had stumbled upon a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the shelter and the streets. And as I continued to show up, listen, and care, my connection to the community only deepened. I became a familiar face, a trusted ally, and a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope to be found.

Sugar and Salvation: How Donuts Brought Hope to the Homeless

As we delivered donuts to the shelters, we discovered that these venues offered more than just a chance to drop off treats – they became sacred spaces for connection and storytelling. We met individuals when they first arrived, weary and uncertain, and revisited them months later, celebrating their progress into permanent housing. They confided in us, sharing tales of struggle and resilience, and remarkably, credited us with sharing their journey. But it was the donuts that initially wrote us into their narrative, providing a consistent reason to meet and connect. Through regular visits, we demonstrated that we cared, not just with words, but with presence – sharing time and space, the only currency that truly mattered in their often tumultuous lives. In these fleeting moments, we became part of their story, and they, ours.
We need to ask for an amount of donation to be something to fund at least 3 weeks of the service.. we need to contact the donut shop to start-up the charity. And we would need to present a reasonable request of them to support a package which included about a month project, so it sounds like we are professional and committed to make a difference. I think it would sound tokenism to ask for just one or two pick-ups. It would look like we are doing it for the wrong reasons. Thus, please consider a few hundred donation to see Sweet Relief happen.
